Hawaii Earthquake

Hawaii, USA – The Salvation Army in Hawaii activated its emergency response network across the state in response to the 6.6 magnitude earthquake which hit in the early hours of Sunday, October 15.

Salvation Army disaster personnel provided more than 3,000 meals including sandwiches, water, candy bars and coffee to travelers stranded at the Honolulu International Airport into the night on Sunday.  Salvation Army teams are currently assessing the extent of the damage and subsequent needs, particularly on Oahu, Maui and the Big Island.  The Salvation Army also remains on standby to assist the Red Cross in their sheltering operation on the Big Island.

Staff are all accounted for and report that there has been no major damage to any Salvation Army facilities.

The Salvation Army’s presence and work in Hawaii dates back to 1894 and now covers the Hawaiian Islands, Guam, the Republic of the Marshall Islands and the Federated States of Micronesia.  In addition to its 16 worship and community centers, The Salvation Army also offers a wide range of comprehensive social service programs, including drug and alcohol rehabilitation, family services, youth programs, adult day care and senior housing.
