On Sunday, June 25, Captain Richard New responded to a call from Jim Phillips, the Sheriff of Dorchester County, requesting snacks and water for his men who were responding to those who were in distress. He and his newly formed disaster team responded as requested to the Hurlock, MD, Fire Company and began serving there. They served primarily response crews. The water was just too high and roads too unsafe to take the canteen mobile feeding unit for a rove.
On Monday, Captain New and the team returned to the Hurlock Fire Company to drop off supplies for the workers in the county’s Emergency Operations Center and began to rove the roads that were passable by the canteen. Many roads were not and are still not passable. Hot meals were not served due to the fact that most everyone still had electricity. Snacks were served to those who were working hard to clean up their homes. Shortly after, Captain New and his team went to Federalsburg, MD to serve more people. Many residents from Seaford, DE came across the state line to be with family in Federalsburg.
Over the course of the two days, 1,390 Snacks and 1,962 Drinks (Gatorade or Water) were served out of the canteen.
