Multiculturalism

June 27th was Multiculturalism Day in Canada.  This is a great thing as it celebrates our country’s cultural richness and diversity as well as the contributions made by various ethnic groups and communities to Canadian Society.

The Salvation Army works in 111 countries around the world and in Canada, our work reflects that diversity.  The Salvation Army exists to meet human need without discrimination and this is expressed through our programs.

True multiculturalism will only come when all barriers such as racism, prejudice and insensitivity are broken down.  True success will only be possible when we all respect each other as people.

  1. I find it surprising and disappointing that nearly half of people polled on this website consider multiculturalism bad for Canadian unity. I wonder if it is just the wording of the question or if there is truly a xenophobic or, dare I say, racist attitude out there. In my opinion, multiculturalism is something to be celebrated, not lamented or merely tolerated. There is room for all in the Kingdom of God, but apparently not enough room in Canada. Sad.

  2. Well said Geoff.

However you’re right the wording of the poll (found in the right sidebar of our homepage http://salvationarmy.ca) could have something to do with the split in results.

Let’s hope for Canada’s sake it’s the wording and that the percentages are not a true reflection of our country’s attitude toward multiculturalism.
