Wednesday June 21, 2006  – The Salvation Army fully endorses the federal government’s plans to introduce legislation that will raise the age of consent to 16 from 14.

Raising the age of consent is a significant step forward as we seek to protect our children from abuse and the life altering consequences that often result from such tragic experiences

The majority of Canadians who believe in raising the age of consent are concerned for the well-being of children and youth who are vulnerable to predators, prostitution and sexual trafficking.

“Those of us who work in this field have no doubt that the benefits of raising the age of consent far outweigh the issues raised by those who oppose this bill,” says Nancy Turley, Territorial Abuse Advisor for The Salvation Army in Canada.
